The Elephant
After owning a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL (W126), I knew another S-Class would eventually find its way into my garage. I wanted something newer that still embodied everything Mercedes-Benz was known for—engineering excellence, effortless comfort, and understated luxury. In late 2019, I found this 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550 (W221) quietly hiding away in Winchester MA. It had remained in the same family for most of its life, making me the fourth owner.
Favorite Feature
I called it THE ELEPHANT - it was that metallic taupe in color and had a commanding presence. The naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8—smooth, quiet, and endlessly capable. The timeless W221 design that still looks elegant years later. The incredible ride quality that effortlessly absorbs miles. The craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout the cabin. The Harman Kardon Logic7 surround sound system, delivering approximately 600 watts through 14 speakers, creating one of the best factory audio experiences Mercedes offered. The feeling of driving a flagship Mercedes-Benz built without compromise.
Best memory
The drive from Boston to Safety Harbor, Florida was the moment this S-Class truly came alive. Somewhere along I-95, I stopped thinking about the destination and simply enjoyed the journey. The S550 didn't feel like a car—it felt like a modern contemporary living room moving effortlessly down the highway. The seats disappeared beneath you, the cabin was library quiet, and hundreds of miles passed without fatigue. Then there was the music. The 600-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system transformed every song into an event. It didn't matter what was playing—Stromae, the Rolling Stones, or Dire Straits ,everything sounded rich, immersive, and alive. Every playlist became the perfect soundtrack for the open road. That trip reminded me that the best luxury cars aren't about getting somewhere faster (although 100 mph was effortless) they're about making you wish the drive would never end.
